A DCP (Digital Cinema Package) is a collection of files used to store and convey digital cinema audio, image, and data streams. This format is the mandatory standard accepted in cinemas worldwide.

Introduced by Digital Cinema Initiatives, this format is designed to store digital cinema content. It essentially replicates the experience of 35mm film and may even provide superior quality.

The format consists of multi-gigabyte MXF (Material eXchange Format) files and index files. A DCP package contains two MXF files: one stores the image, and the other contains the sound. The index files contain metadata for the digital projector, including the film’s title, length, and content.

The MXF files are composed of JPEG2000 files, each exported individually from the finished film (each .j2c file represents a single frame). The audio is in linear PCM format.
